The Shaving Brush Guide: How to Choose, Use, and Care for Yours

A shaving brush is the most underrated tool in wet shaving. Here's how to choose the right one and use it correctly.

Why Use a Shaving Brush?

A brush creates a richer, more consistent lather than your hands alone. It lifts the hair away from the skin, exfoliates the face, and distributes shaving soap evenly for a closer, more comfortable shave.

Bristle Types

Badger hair: The traditional choice. Soft, water-retentive, and excellent at building lather. Best for sensitive skin.

Boar hair: Stiffer than badger, better for exfoliation. Takes longer to break in but performs well once it does.

Synthetic: Vegan-friendly, quick-drying, and increasingly high-quality. A good choice for men who prefer cruelty-free products.

How to Use It

Soak the brush in warm water for 1–2 minutes before use. Shake out excess water. Load the brush with Ironwood's shaving soap by swirling on the puck for 30–60 seconds. Apply to face in circular motions to build lather and lift hair.

How to Care for It

Rinse thoroughly after each use. Shake out excess water and hang bristle-down to dry. Never store wet — it degrades the bristles and promotes mold.
