The Complete Guide to Wet Shaving for Men
Wet shaving is the closest, most comfortable shave you can get — when done right. Here's the complete guide.
What Is Wet Shaving?
Wet shaving uses a safety razor or straight razor with shaving soap or cream, applied with a brush. It's the traditional method — slower, more deliberate, and significantly better for your skin than cartridge razors.
The Equipment
You need a quality razor (safety or straight), a shaving brush, shaving soap or cream, and a good aftershave. The brush creates a rich lather that lifts the hair and lubricates the skin for a closer, smoother shave.
The Technique
Step 1: Prep your skin with warm water or a hot towel to soften the hair and open pores.
Step 2: Build a lather with your brush and shaving soap. Apply in circular motions to lift the hair.
Step 3: Shave with the grain on the first pass. Against the grain only if needed for a closer shave.
Step 4: Rinse with cool water to close pores.
Step 5: Apply aftershave immediately to soothe and protect freshly shaved skin.
For Sensitive Skin
Use an alcohol-free aftershave and a single-blade safety razor. Multiple blades increase irritation. Less is more. If you're keeping a beard, follow up with Ironwood's Beard Oil on any remaining facial hair to keep the skin hydrated.
